The hand-auger ectuiprner~t consisted of a tl~rce~ <br />irZC1i-diameter stainless steel auger attached to threaded stainless steel rods. Our f eld enGineers <br />longed the soil encountered and obiai~.zed samples for visual c]assi~_cation and )aboratory teStino <br />by drivin~~ soil samplers with a slide hammer. The boreholes were bacl~wi'illed with bentrnlite <br />chips. Soi! cLrttings were spread on die gro~~~nd surFace, around the borehole. A ,u1nr~~ar}, of <br />suhs~.irl'ace eonditioi~s encotuacred iu soil bori~ags is presented in 1 able 1. <br />The hand auger equipment was dccont~minated hetwcc~i~ each boring ii1 a solution of Alcoi~o~: <br />ai7d water, rinsed with tap r~~atei ,and then, ri~ised a second time with, deionized dater.
