The obstacle course allows students to practice bicycle handling skills, pedestrian safety and general traffic safety behavior while waiting for, entering and exiting school buses, public buses and passenger cars. By using a realistic traffic environment that challenges the ability of the students to recognize and react to traffic hazards, they become safer in traffic. The lesson plans for the rodeos were as follows: Bicycle Handlin Sg kills Proper braking techniques for various situations steep hill wet pavement sand or debris Proper mounting and dismounting techniques Left and right hand turns Left hand shoulder check (scanning for traffic) Proper turning techniques (avoidance of rocks, sand, cracks, corners) Traffic Assessment Skills Leading causes of bicycle, pedestrian and vehicle collisions Crossing at intersections, alleyways, driveways Vehicles turning left and right Correct use of bike lanes, paths and routes Safest place to ride and walk Correct way to cross the street from the sidewalk Railroad crossings Bus and rail stops The mechanics of the school-based rodeo are as follows: a. Logistics Rodeos are set up in school playgrounds or parking lots. b. Registration All bicyclists participating in the rodeo are required to submit a permission form signed by a parent or legal guardian. The permission forms are distributed to the students at school. Children who participated as pedestrians are not required to submit a permission form. c. Bicycle & Helmet Inspection Each bicycle that is brought to the rodeo is inspected by Safe Moves.
