MINUTES Page 11 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-September 8, 2009 <br />Councilmember Gregory thanked the Police and Fire Departments for coordinating National <br />Night Out. He commented on a meeting with the Downtown Business Association last week <br />at Sergio's, and stated that the members are very excited about the new Joaquin Plaza.. <br />Councilmember Gregory announced the Challenge Walk Off at Bancroft Middle School track <br />this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, which is co-sponsored by State Farm Insurance. <br />Councilmember Gregory mentioned the Healthy Eating Active Living campaign, which is <br />partnering with the League of California Cities, and will hold an awards ceremony at the <br />League Annual Conference. He added that San Leandro has a highly regarded wellness <br />policy. Councilmember Gregory commented on a Safe Routes to Transit grant application <br />submitted by the City, which would improve access to mass transit sites; and on the benefits <br />of The Alameda at San Leandro Crossings development. He attended the meeting of the <br />Eden Township Healthcare District on San Leandro Hospital. Councilmember Gregory <br />requested that tonight's meeting be adjourned in memory of Joe Doherty and John <br />McKissack, two long-time San Leandrans; and Eileen Barros, mother of Senior Planner Sally <br />Barros. <br />Mayor Santos expressed appreciation to Councilmember Gregory for his leadership in <br />coordinating the 50 Million Pound Challenge. He attended the Court of Honor for Joseph <br />Diaz, as well as several National Night Out events. Mayor Santos stated that he has been <br />working with the Latino Business Council, and agreed with Councilmember Prola that local <br />Hispanic groups are gaining influence. He commented on the status of San Leandro Hospital, <br />and the 2010 census committee. Mayor Santos announced that he would adjourn tonight's <br />meeting in memory of Joe Doherty; John McKissack; Emir "Coco" Hall, who was an <br />Administrative Assistant in the Community Development Department; Rose May Gilbert, <br />mother of Fire Chief Sheldon Gilbert; Eileen Barros, mother of Senior Planner Sally Barros; <br />John Robert Lothrop, younger brother of former District 6 Councilmember Joanne Lothrop; <br />and Thomas Marovich, Jr., a firefighter with the U.S. Forestry Service, who died while <br />rappelling from a helicopter. <br />13.
