MINUTES Page 10 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting~eptember 8, 2009 <br />By consensus, the City Council approved this recommendation. <br />12. CITY COUNCIL COA~IlVIENTS <br />Councilmember Reed commented that she worked the art booth with 48 children at the <br />Housing Authority Carnival, and she attended a meeting organized by Officer Kerri Kovach <br />of the Police Department with residents of Eden Lodge. Officer Kovach is arranging <br />meetings with residents at various apartment complexes, and is inviting the District <br />Councilmember to join her. <br />Vice Mayor Starosciak attended a community meeting called by the San Lorenzo Unified <br />School District, at which the qualified school construction bond lottery was discussed. It was <br />later announced that San Leandro Unified School District was successful in the lottery. Vice <br />Mayor Starosciak commended staff on the successful National Night Out. She commented on <br />a letter written to the Council by Martin Francis, requesting that the Council discuss taking <br />over the Flag Day celebration. Mayor Santos indicated that the City Council Civic and <br />Cultural Committee would discuss Mr. Francis' request at its next meeting. <br />Councilmember Prola attended the following events: a Hispanic Chamber mixer, remarking <br />that the Hispanic community is becoming more organized; National Night Out; the relocation <br />of John Vella's Locker Room next to Ricky's Sports Bar & Grill; the 9th Grade Academy <br />celebration; a Chamber function at the Dunsmuir Estates; the San Leandro Art Association <br />festival at Casa Peralta; Congressman Pete Stark's Town Hall meeting on health care, which <br />he noted was very orderly; a ribbon cutting at Tito's near Bayfair; the Eden Township <br />Healthcare District meeting on the closure of San Leandro Hospital; and the Eagle Scout <br />Court of Honor for Joe Diaz, son of Interim Assistant City Manager Jacqui Diaz. <br />Councilmember Prola commented on a recent article in The San Leandro Times regarding <br />pensions of retired City employees, pointing out that the average state pension is $26,000. <br />Councilmember Stephens attended some of the National Night Out events. One of the events <br />was hosted by Best Manor Homeowners Association president Corina Lopez at Siempre <br />Verde Park. The attendees at the event extended their appreciation to the City Council for <br />adopting the ban on alcohol in City parks. Councilmember Stephens expressed appreciation <br />to Police Chief Ian Willis for his leadership. During National Night Out, members of the <br />community conveyed compliments and expressed pride in the Police Department, and <br />Councilmember Stephens stated that this speaks to the Police Department staff's dedication to <br />the community. Councilmember Stephens announced that Lawrence Beaman, who <br />performed at the City's Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, is a contestant on the show, <br />"America's Got Talent." He commented on the recent article in the Daily Review about the <br />plastic patch in the Pacific Ocean, and stated the need to step up efforts to limit Styrofoam <br />and plastic waste in the City. <br />Councilmember Souza thanked Community Relations Representative Kathy Ornelas and <br />Police and Fire Department staff for coordinating a very successful National Night Out. She <br />commented that residents really appreciate the opportunity to meet and speak with public <br />safety staff and Councilmembers. <br />
