Alameda County
Cycles of Change & Safe Routes to Schools Alameda County
Bicycle Safety Certification Program
Our Program Description
This exciting Bicycle Safety Certification Program is a 2 hour in -class and 8-10
hour on -the -bike training. Students will learn how to perform a bike safety
check, adjust helmets, use hand signals, read traffic signs, maneuver through
intersections and safely navigate their school's neighborhood by bike. The goal of
this program is to increase students biking to and from school by certifying them
in bicycle safety. Our goal is to make this program sustainable, meaning there is
a teacher trained at your site to who can teach the curriculum and there is a plan
of action of how to fund or acquire the equipment (bikes, helmets, tool, teacher
kits, etc) for your school.
To help you make this program sustainable at your school we have a three year
plan:
The first year we provide all the resources needed (including our time as
teachers) to operate the program and excite the school about a possibility for
future bike programs.
The second year we train one of your teachers to teach the bicycle certification
program with our full support.
By the third year, your teacher will be able to operate and teach the full
program and we will provide the needed support. Please check out our website
to find out what a long term bike program looks like at other schools in the east
bay at www.cyclesofchange.or.
We have space for new schools to sign-up for the Fall of 2009 and Spring of
2010. For more information contact: safecycles@cyclesofchange.org or
sr2s@transformca.org, or call 510-740-3150 ext. 323.
