<br />December 21, 2009 Section 4: Transportation and Land Use <br />a SR2S grant and installed four lighted crosswalks at four schools. Through a partnership with <br />a local transportation non-profit TransForm, the City has initiated two SR2S programs: one at <br />Roosevelt Elementary School which focuses on walking and another at Bancroft Middle School <br />which focuses on biking. <br />Measures and actions for consideration: <br />Improve bike routes for safety. <br /> Develop a numbering system for the City’s bike routes. <br />? <br />Work with bicycle advocacy groups in San Leandro and neighboring communities to publish <br />a regional bike route map for general use. Require stricter police regulation on bike lanes to <br />reduce accidents from parked cars. <br />Continue to update and implement the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (2004). <br /> <br />? <br />Update and implement the master plan to further create a network of safe routes for <br />pedestrians and bicyclists to make the City more accessible through sustainable strategies. <br />Improve crossings for pedestrians and cyclists at intersections in the City. <br /> This can <br />? <br />be done through the use of enhanced crosswalks and corner bulb-outs to increase <br />crosswalk visibility, slow turning traffic, as well as installation of detection loops for <br />20 <br />bicycles. User-friendly pavements and crossings can encourage a higher number of <br />pedestrians and bicyclists. <br />Expand the Safe Routes to Schools program. <br /> San Leandro has already been actively <br />? <br />involved with this program. Staff could work with neighborhoods to establish and implement <br />programs that encourage children to walk and bicycle to school. <br />Implement the East Bay Greenway Concept Plan. <br /> This plan creates a corridor for <br />? <br />bicyclists and pedestrians along twelve miles of elevated BART tracks from 18th Avenue in <br />Oakland to Hayward. Not only will this corridor promote pedestrian usage and biking, it will <br />also include play areas to help transform neglected areas and promote healthier and <br />stronger communities. <br />Provide incentives to city employees who carpool, bike or take public transit to work. <br /> <br />? <br />Adopt bicycle ordinance that would provide financial incentives to employees that bike to <br /> <br />work as one example. <br /> <br /> <br />20 <br /> Detection loops for bicycles is based on the same technology utilized for detection of vehicular traffic at traffic <br />signals.
