We
are currently working in partnership with community and labor groups within San
Leandro, such as Congregations Organizing for Renewal and the Alameda County
Building Trades, as well as regional and national groups, such as TransForm (formerly
the Transportation and Land Use Coalition), Greenbelt Alliance, Reconnecting
America/Center for TOD and Non-profit Housing of Northern California to promote
the creation of great communities near transit hubs that meet the housing,
transportation, environmental and economic needs of all residents and particularly
those of the region's most vulnerable residents.
We envision a San Leandro that meets the housing, transportation, health and
recreational needs of all its residents and see the Housing Element as a great
opportunity to ensure adequate and affordable housing for those who often have most
difficulty with this; low income families and households. We have been participating
in the Housing Element update process since it began over a year ago and have
attended one town-hall meeting, one City Council work session, one roundtable
discussion and one individual meeting with the Housing Element author, Barry Miller
during that time.
Overall, we are very impressed by the scope and depth of the Housing Element and
believe that many concerns that we have heard via the membership of Congregations
Organizing for Renewal (COR) have been reflected in the Housing Needs section.
Similarly, many of our original policy recommendations that we expressed during the
public meetings and in our comment letter on the Administrative Review Draft have
been incorporated into the policy and implementation sections of this draft.
