Appendix -Design Guidelines
2. Openings -The large-span openings typical of parking structures
should be subdivided and designed as windows rather than left-
over space.
3. Stair and Elevator Cores -should project or recess for visibility and
to break up large wall surfaces.
4. Facades -should have articulation and surface detail that is comple-
mentary to a quality office building; e.g., base, columns, cornice(s),
etc.
5. Roofline -Some form of finished edge, such as a shaped parapet
and/or ornamental railing, should be provided. The top of stair and
elevator cores should have peaked or otherwise notable roof forms
to enhance their visibility and the form of the structure overall.
6. Security -All structures should maintain levels of visibility, lighting,
and access that promote use and facilitate supervision.
C. SUBSURFACE PARKING -Given objectives to maximize infill opportu-
nities in the Strategy area, subsurface rather than surface parking is rec-
ommended wherever fgasible. It is most likely to be constructed as part
of multi-unit residential development, but could be incorporated in of-
fice/R&D development as well.
1. Buildings with Subsurface Parking -should have finished floor el-
evations should be no more than 3'-6" above sidewalk grade.
2. Exposed Subsurface Parking Walls -should be designed as an at-
tractivebuilding base and accented with foundation plantings.
-A7-
