Entry <br />~ it <br />Closed shades on windows <br />and door along sidewalk <br />make entry ambiguous. <br />Entry. Store entrances activate the <br />street. Today, many stores in the <br />downtown, particularly along E. <br />14th Street and Hays Street, have <br />"turned their backs" on the main <br />street, with entrances facing the rear <br />parking lot. <br />For an economically viable and <br />vibrant streetscape, storefront en- <br />trances should face onto the main <br />street. Combined with on-street <br />parking, street-facing storefronts <br />make an easily understood, tradi- <br />tional downtown pattern. Second- <br />ary rear entrances are to be encour- <br />aged for service and easy access to <br />the stores from the parking areas. <br />However, certain retail uses require <br />Clear recessed entry with <br />special paving, and <br />flanked by large display <br />windows. <br />a single point of access and control. <br />All entries should be clearly ar- <br />ticulated by architecture and signage. <br />Main Entrances <br />Existing structures which have <br />altered their facilities to only accom- <br />modate rear parking lot entry, <br />should reinstall front entrances <br />along the street. <br />All entries should be clearly <br />marked and framed with architec- <br />tural elements and/or special mate- <br />rials and color. <br />Renovate and restore doors and <br />glazing whenever possible. Special file <br />or paving in these areas should be <br />restored, repaired or replaced as <br />needed. <br />Recessed entries are recom- <br />mended in new construction. Spe- <br />cial paving is recommended in these <br />areas as it identifies an individual <br />storefront, and adds to the grain of <br />the downtown.
