By offering access to custom-
ers on both the front and back of a
building, circulation is improved
between the street and the parking
lots. This dual entry condition some-
times creates a management chal-
lenge for storeowners concerned
with loss prevention, and a single
front entry may be required. '
Display windows should be in-
cluded in rear entry areas facing
parking as a way of animating this
environment.
Tiny rear door is unwelcoming and
it is unclear if this is service en-
trance or a customer entrance.
Clutter detracts.
The rear facade should be clean,
well maintained and inviting to pass-
ing pedestrians. Storage and garbage
areas should be contained and out
of view.
Clear signs should be included at
the rear of buildings. If the door is
not for public use, this should be
clearly stated and directions to the
front door should be given.
Awnings are recommended as a
way of making a tear entry clear in
what can sometimes be a cluttered
environment.
Planter boxes can bring color and
brighten up a rear entry.
Rear doors should be well lit, in-
cluding illumination of the store
sign.
page 68 October 2000 San Leandro Downtown Plan & Urban Design Guidelines
Back entrance clear, decorative and
leads to an outdoor seating area.
