Use of these decora- <br />tive cornices and parapets are rec- <br />ommended on new construction. <br />The success of these parapets de- <br />pends on a reveal or accent materi- <br />als to create deep shadows. <br />If roofs are visible, careful atten- <br />tion must be paid to roofing materi- <br />als. Clay or concrete tile, currently <br />popular in the downtown area, is <br />recommended in a red or terra cotta <br />color. <br />Asphalt, metal roofing and other <br />materials are also acceptable if well <br />integrated into a building design, es- <br />pecially if combined with more tra- <br />ditional materials. In all cases, <br />rooflines should be edged by a well <br />designed gutter or cornice. <br />IX1ood shingles are not recom- <br />mended in the downtown area as <br />this is associated .more with a resi- <br />dential area. <br />Window Glaring <br />All ground floor windows should <br />have a clear or translucent glazing. <br />Solar control can be achieved by use <br />of awnings and canopies. <br />Reflective glass should not be <br />used. <br />Glass block may be used when <br />visual privacy is necessary, as it pro- <br />vides interior light and avoids the <br />problem of permanently closed <br />blinds or blank walls along the side- <br />walk. However, this surface should <br />not be used for large areas, as it has <br />a similar effect as a blank wall along <br />the sidewalk. <br />If tinting is necessary for upper <br />floor windows to prevent glare it is <br />recommended to use as light a color <br />as possible, in shades of blue, green <br />and gray.
