Site Lighting <br />Night lighting can create a <br />romantic atmosphere. <br />Site lighting. Site lighting in- <br />cludes street lights and other free- <br />standing lighting of outdoor spaces. <br />A lighting scheme for these areas <br />should be established. The lighting <br />scheme should provide a safe envi- <br />ronment for pedestrians and ve- <br />hicles. By selecting a set of lighting <br />fixtures from the same family to be <br />applied throughout downtown area, <br />site lighting can create a harmoni- <br />ous framework for other private <br />building lighting. <br />Posts should be of pedestrian <br />scale, generally between 10 and 16 <br />feet mounting height. <br />Additional site lighting should <br />contribute to the character created <br />by this framework. Decorative or <br />"theme light fixtures", however, <br />may be incorporated into specific <br />projects in order to achieve a desired <br />character. Such "breaks" in the sys- <br />tem can contribute to the grain of <br />the downtown and should be re- <br />viewed on a case-by-case basis. <br />Vehicular and pedestrian site en- <br />trances should receive extra site <br />lighting. <br />Focal points, such as a special <br />tree, statue or plaza space, treated <br />with decorative or intensified light- <br />ing are encouraged in order to cre- <br />ate points of visual interest. <br />Areas adjacent to residential ar- <br />eas should use shielded fixtures <br />which minimize overflow glare. <br />Site lighting intensity should be <br />sufficient to allow for easy pedes- <br />San Leandro Downtown Plan & Urban Design Guidelines Oetober2000 page 85 <br />A simple acorn light <br />
