^ San Leandro Creek/Bridge Overcrossing - is recommended to have
ornamental sidewalk paving, lighting, and concrete bridge rail to
match bridges on East 14th Street and San Leandro Boulevard.
Existing vegetation should be trimmed to enhance visibility and
security.
Design Materials & Furnishings Recommendations
Construction details and specifications for the various components
of the streetscape will be established in project construction draw-
ings. However, the RAC subcommittee has made initial recommen-
dations for the design character of materials and furnishings to be
employed.
In general, a somewhat modern as opposed to traditional/ Victorian
theme is recommended. This reflects the era of the area's commercial
and residential buildings, as well as the art deco/modern and WPA
architectural forms of San Leandro's notable public buildings, includ-
~~
tiN~y, .
t
~:~
~;
ing City Hall, Veterans Memorial Building, Washington School, and
San Leandro High School.
Sidewalks and Special Paving Areas
Unless cracked or otherwise damaged, it is assumed that existing walks
will be retained wherever possible. However, it is likely that sidewalk
areas will need to be cut and patched for new trenches to accommo-
date electrical conduit and irrigation lines for new lighting and street
trees.
As indicated by the "Frontage Improvements" sketch, trenches should
be consistent in width and repaved with an ornamental surface that
creates an attractive accent band along the curbline. It is recommended
that the trench band areas be approximately 2'-6" in width. The pav-
ingband should be extended along the perimeter of proposed corner
curb bulb-outs as well, for consistency, though trenches in these newly
paved areas would not necessarily need to follow the curb line.
- 19 -
The San Leandro Creek crossing separates commercial frontages to the Norfh and South
and does not highlight the Creek in an attractive way.
An ornamental concrete balustrade and pedestrian oriented lighting are recommended,
similar to the City's other Creek crossings.
