As noted. in Chapter II, the recommended material for trench repav-
ing is concrete pavers in a traditional (e.g., brick) shape. Concrete
pavers are also recommended for the Hollywood Place and South
MacArthur Place special areas. Thicker pavers would be needed for
the parking surface at South MacArthur Place than would be used
for the sidewalk surface; a dark color should be used that masks oil,
tire marks and other auto-related stains.
Trees and Plants
Infill street trees in curbed planters between parking spaces are rec-
ommended. Species should be deep rooted, to minimize- heaving of
pavement, and drought tolerant to minimize irrigation requirements.
London Plane Tree (Platanus acerifolia) is the tree currently planted
along the street and is recommended for the curbed planters as well.
A consistent planting of flowering trees is proposed in new medians.
Recommended species include crape myrtle, kwanzan cherry, and
flowering crabapple. Low-growing flowering groundcover is recom-
mended for all planter areas.
Lighting
New, pedestrian-oriented streetlights are recommended along all
building frontages. A pole and luminaire that has a somewhat mod-
ern appearance is recommended; e.g., simple rather than highly or-
namental in detailing. The initial RAC subcommittee recommenda-
tion is indicated on the "Furnishings' graphic; it has a somewhat art
deco/modern character in keeping with a number of San Leandro's
notable public buildings, including City Hall and the Veterans Me-
morial Building. The "Zenith" luminare and "P104A" pole by Zed is
recommended at least preliminarily; it is shown on the following page.
Recommended paint color is silver to compliment existing neighbor-
hood street lights.
Benches, Trash Receptacles and Bike Racks
Concrete, wood, and metal benches were reviewed by the RAC sub-
committee. Aslatted metal bench, the "Scarborough" by Landscape
Forms, is recommended. This bench has a relatively flat seat which
makes rising easier for seniors and others; a center arm rest would
be added to discourage sleeping. The recommended style for the
complementary trash receptacle is the "Ironsite 5-42" by Victor Stanley,
Inc., both are illustrated on the following page. "Hoop' bike racks
are recommended at selected locations. Recommended paint color
for furnishings is dark green.
Concrete Formwork
New medians, curbed planters for street trees, and planter/seatwalls
for the South MacArthur Place special area will be made of concrete,
either poured-in-place or precast depending upon the available bud-
get. The cumulative visual effect of these concrete elements will be
significant, and a theme should be established that makes them an
integral part of the streetscape design.
Simple decorative forming details and perhaps pigment should be
incorporated in the concrete formwork to reflect the design theme
desired; in fact, most art deco buildings were made of concrete (such
as the Veterans Building), and characteristic score lines, arcs and cham-
fers have been incorporated into the "Median end Frontage Design
Concept" sketches in the following pages.
-20-
