IV. Appendix
Community Workshop #1
February 26, 2000
Approximately 75 people attended the workshop. The comments
listed were written on post-it notes by workshop participants and
attached to graphic illustrations. Positive comments are indicated
with "+", negative with "", and neutral with "/".
Preliminary Subareas Map
Slow down the traffic coming off the freeway.
Pressure landlord to clean up property at corner of Superior/
MacArthur (at least he should take down ugly green building).
Mural (on freeway wall).
Direct the trucks that have to exit MacArthur/Foothill to stay on
Foothill.
Definitely need Caltrans improvements between 105th and
Dutton/Estudillo to exit onto MacArthur.
Freeway frontage planting along west side of freeway is bleak
... need more buffer shrubs!!!
North MacArthur Initial Design Concept
Hollywood Plaza Option 1: Island
+ I like the narrowing of the street here.
+ It will slow traffic down, stops people from making fast u-turns.
+ Close Broadmoor for plaza.
+ An island is a great idea for Herma Court.
- Should add Durant intersection to design area, do island or
something there too.
- Maybe extend parking area planters to reduce intersection area
(at Durant).
- Existing stores at Hollywood Plaza should go; cari t see they
generate worthwhile business.
Hollywood Plaza Option 2: Plaza
+ Put stop light at Durant and MacArthur.
+ Lights for pedestrians is a great idea but use plastic in lieu of
glass.
+ Close street at Herma Court and Broadmoor.
+ I love plaza and places to sit and meditate but it as to be moni-
tored by police to keep out drug dealing.
+ Good plaza with places to sit - a cafe/nice restaurant to service
neighborhood.
+ Close off street here (at Herma Court).
+ Yes. Invites foot traffic.
- More noise and (need) "doughnut" traffic control (at Durant).
- Too much noise! Donuts and bad people.
- Makes it hard for people to get to the businesses.
- It may create an area for the wrong crowd to hang out. Ditto.
- Hides the businesses behind it.
- There is no foot traffic on this corner, so it wori t be useful.
Basic Street Design Plan and Cross-Section
+ This site should be a park (vacant site at NW corner Westbay
Ave.).
+ Put park at site (same as above).
+ Traffic signals at Victoria Avenue.
+ Lights on sidewalk w/trees between cars: good lighting for
pedestrians and trees can spread out and grow properly with
out wire interference.
+ OK great!
+ Wonderful.
+ (Trees) every 3 cars (instead of every 2 cars would be better.
+ (Trees) every 3 cars (instead of every 2 cars would be better.
(separate comment from above)
+ Good, but (should have) as many trees as possible.
- None.
- Al -
