breakdown for the school district is 25.1 percent Asian, 29.9 percent Hispanic, 16.7 percent <br />Black, 24.4 percent White and 3.9 percent Other. <br />The San Lorenzo Unified School District has two elementary schools and one middle <br />school within the city limits. These three schools have a student population of approximately <br />2104 with an ethnic breakdown of 25.7 percent Asian, 29.5 percent Hispanic, 9.5 percent Black, <br />30.3 percent White and 5 percent Other. <br />Link to Community Policing <br />The San Leandro Police Department takes great pride in the service it provides the <br />community. Our philosophy is to treat the members of our community as customers. While <br />many law enforcement agencies look for ways to cut services to the public, the San Leandro <br />Police Department recognizes the importance of a partnership between the Department and the <br />community. Community outreach is accomplished through the Bicycle Patrol, the Tactical Unit, <br />and the Officer in the Mall. The Department sponsors the Neighborhood Watch Program, the <br />D.A.R.E. Program, the Police Cadet Program, the Police Reserve Program, the Citizen Police <br />Academy, Sober Graduation, Grad Night at the High School and the Retired Senior Volunteer <br />Program. In addition, several employees of the Department are actively involved in community <br />organizations such as the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, San Leandro Community Counseling <br />and Girls Incorporated. They have served as coaches for school sports teams and have taught <br />police-related classes at the high school and local community college. <br />The School Resource Officer added by this grant would be another component of <br />community-oriented policing. This additional resource would help ensure that the schools <br />remain safe and that problems are addressed in a timely manner.
