activity on school grounds; being a resource for school administrators; locating and returning <br />truants to school; preparing cases and testifying at expulsion hearings; training students, parents <br />and staff on issues such as gangs and drugs; teaching and making presentations to classes on <br />police-related topics; enforcing tobacco-related laws; providing security at sporting events, <br />dances and other after school programs; assigning students to attend counseling services in lieu <br />of criminal prosecution; attending meetings such as SLAYA and SARB; attending <br />Neighborhood Watch and business meetings; and working with Juvenile Probation and Child <br />Protective Services. This program has been instrumental in identifying security issues at .the <br />schools such as trimming of shrubs, lighting, posting informational signs, and making staff aware <br />of gang-related clothing and hats, etc. The School Resource Officer has made a positive impact <br />on all these areas, which has resulted in a close working relationship with school administrators, <br />community members, businesses, students, parents and other law enforcement agencies. <br />The current School Resource Officer Program has one officer assigned to the high school <br />and one assigned to the three middle schools. The use of the two School Resource Officers has <br />allowed the schools to have two trained police officers who understand school <br />policies/procedures and who can respond to their needs. The officers have training and <br />experience in matters specifically concerning juveniles. The School Resource Officer Program <br />within San Leandro has been very successful. The grant would allow the San Leandro Police <br />Department to add a third officer to the School Resource Officer Program. This addition would <br />continue to benefit the school districts, the Police Department and the community. <br />The San Leandro Unified School District has a student population of approximately <br />8,336 enrolled in eight elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools.
