1
EAST BAY REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT •
January 19, 2000 :`_
Janet McBride BOARD OF DIREDTOR~
ABAGBay Trail Project Beverly Lane
President
PO BOX 2050 ward s
Carol Severin
Oakland, CA 94604 Vice-Pres;dent
Ward 3
John Sutter
I am writing on behalf of the East Bay Regional Park District to support the application of Ward Zrer
the City of San Leandro to the San Francisco Bay Trail Regional Development Program to secrrearyskamp
complete a trail segment linking Oyster Bay in San Leandro with the Martin Luther King Jr.Ward s
Ted Radke
(MLK) Shoreline in Oakland. The project includes a planning and preliminary engineering Ward,
study for a bridge over the slough just to the north of Oyster Bay, m San Leandro. Doug siden
Ward 4
The alignment for the Bay Trail, shown in the District's Master Plan and the City of San
Leandro's Bikeway Plan and General Plan, runs within or adjacent to the redevelopment
area between Roberts Landing and the San Leandro-Oakland border. The District has
recently completed the Bay Trail around the Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline (partially
funded through the Bay Trail Grant Program), and is currently working with the City of San
Leandro and the Port of Oakland to complete this critical link. Participation by ABAG in
the costs of this improvement would provide both recreational and non-motorized commute
transportation benefits to San Leandro and Oakland residents within the redevelopment area
Safety conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians and a direct connection to airport and other
regional park facilities would also be features of the projects. Other proposed enhancements
of bike lanes in the vicinity would provide employees and residents in the area opportunities
for walking and direct links between two Regional Parks and the SF Bay Trail and San
Leandro Marina Area. Additional links to BART and other multi-modal destinations could
be made as well.
With the increased popularity of the bicycle for recreation and transportation, the need for
the regional trail at this shoreline location is indisputable. East Bay Regional Park District
endorses these projects and encourages the Association of Bay Area Governments to
recognize the value of this important Bay Trail projects.
Sincerely,
i~~~'~"~
Steve Fiala
Trails Specialist FNGjNFF
~qN ~~NG
A 2~~Q 0
cc: Raymond Davis, San Leandro Transportation Administrator r Q
Kristi McKenney, Port of Oakland ~NSPO~
rgT,oN
Jear, Siri
Ward 1
Pat O'Brien
General Manager
295C Peralta Oaks Court P.O.
