CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> A. Council Member Myers said he received a letter from a lady on Thornton <br /> Avenue regarding street lights; the City Manager said staff will look <br /> into the matter. <br /> Council Member Myers said he received a letter from the Building and <br /> Construction Trades Council and asked that it be placed on the next <br /> agenda. <br /> B. Council Member Loeffler said he presented a City of San Leandro plaque <br /> to the St. Leanders' Dominican nuns, who are moving from the school and <br /> church. He said their order has served the community for 115 years, <br /> and the presentation was a very moving event. <br /> Council Member Loeffler discussed the January 19th San Leandro <br /> Collaborative meeting, an on -going effort of 20 people working on an <br /> assessment of the needs of youth in San Leandro. He said it is <br /> exciting to watch the movement of ideas toward the needs of youth. <br /> Council Member Loeffler said there is an increasing problem of graffiti <br /> etched into glass. He said his school replaced more than 40 windows at <br /> a cost of over $7,000. He said the etching, unlike regular graffiti, <br /> cannot be painted out and is very destructive. He asked that the <br /> community become involved. <br /> Council Member Loeffler said railroad crossings are still a problem. <br /> The City Attorney said the Public Utilities Commission is not <br /> enthusiastic about dealing with this issue, so the City is forced to go <br /> through the lengthy process of going before an administrative law <br /> judge. The City Manager said those crossings are not deemed hazardous <br /> so Southern Pacific officials want the City to pay 50% of the cost. He <br /> said this matter will be part of the Capital Improvement Program in the <br /> upcoming year. Council Member Loeffler suggested going to the League <br /> of California Cities. Mayor Corbett and Council Member Perry noted <br /> that this has been an issue for many years. <br /> Council Member Loeffler requested an update on the 1996 Cherry <br /> Festival. <br /> C. Vice Mayor Kerr said he spoke to the Shriners last week; he said it was <br /> good to talk to people his age or older. <br /> Vice Mayor Kerr said there is a lot of trash in the flood control <br /> channel on Wicks Boulevard. He said the Flood Control District will <br /> give permission to an organized group cleanup, and there is already an <br /> offer from the soccer league to help. He said he hopes to get the <br /> Washington Manor Junior League involved as well. <br />
