Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 6, 1996 Page - 7 -
9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Lothrop noted the March election had the highest turnout
of voters since 1978. She said she is interested in receiving
information regarding the process for consolidating the next City
election and on the cost savings in the March election.
B. Council Member Glaze noted that Root Park should have a bike rack. He
also expressed concern about the Dahlia Society's inability to obtain
access to the Casa Peralta and dig up roots; he requested that staff
arrange access for the Society and ensure the dahlia garden at the Casa
remains intact.
C. Vice Mayor Polvorosa said Root Park is outstanding, and he would like
to see the creek trail continue up to Bancroft Junior High School. He
said the public can now experience the creek firsthand, and the park is
a jewel.
Vice Mayor Polvorosa noted he and Council Member Galvan attended the
Altamont Landfill, and he was amazed at the cleanliness of the
operation. He said he also attended the EBMUD Education Center at
Washington and Parrott and said it is a wonderful facility within our
community. He also attended the Orchard Supply Accident Free
Recognition event and noted that the San Leandro store is one of only
two stores out of the 61 -store chain that have been accident free for
two years.
• D. Council Member Galvan said the Altamont Landfill and the EBMUD
Educational Center are very interesting events and people should look
at both.
Council Member Galvan also commented on Root Park and said, 20 years
ago, Tony Polvorosa, Vice Mayor Polvorosa's father, introduced him to
the creek experience, so he is supportive of and excited about Root
Park. He said it will be a good experience for young people to be able
to access and enjoy the creek.
Council Member Galvan noted the resignation of Ed Martin from the
Recreation and Parks Commission and requested that nomination of a new
RAPC member be placed on the next agenda.
E. Mayor Corbett said many people are pleased with Root Park, and she
thanked everyone involved.
Mayor Corbett requested information on the funding for and next steps
in the East 14th Street median process.
Mayor Corbett asked for information regarding the possibility of
strengthening the City's already strong panhandling ordinance, in light
of recent case law.
