Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 20, 1996 Page - 4 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
F. Darlene Evans, 361 Bristol Boulevard, said homeowners' associations
would benefit from participation in Leadership San Leandro. She said
she likes shopping in downtown San Leandro or at Bayfair rather than
San Francisco and suggested the City look into uses for a vacant bank
downtown. She said people are tired of panhandlers. She spoke
regarding various proposals to renovate downtown and said changes
should not be excessive. She said San Leandro citizens should be made
aware of Alameda County activities.
G. Dana Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, said the women who proposed to
perform at Dick's Restaurant have worked hard to become fit. He said,
if classic artists could appreciate the beauty of nude women, why was
he not permitted to do so. He said the Council should concentrate on
real issues, let the girls dance, and let people appreciate the beauty
of their bodies.
H. Betsy Venters, 1322 Castro Street, said downtown plaza improvements
will not attract people to the area because there are panhandlers and
bums. She said the dancers should have the right to perform because
they are humans, women, adults; however, she is concerned about the
type of people such activities will draw to the area.
I. Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, asked how many City employees and
elected officials are authorized to carry concealed weapons. He spoke
regarding Leadership San Leandro and said it uses taxpayers' money and
is political. He said other groups should have the right to something.
He said Council meeting agendas should include correspondence. He said
the Pledge of Allegiance is not necessary. He said the public should
have the right to remove and comment on Consent Calendar items. He
suggested formation of a public advocate's office.
6. CONSENT CALENDAR
Consent Calendar items are typically routine in nature and are considered
for approval by the City Council with one single action. The City Council
may remove items from the Consent Calendar for purposes of discussion.
Items listed on the Consent Calendar are deemed to have been read by title.
Items 6.D and 6.E were removed from the Consent Calendar to New Business.
The remaining items on the Consent Calendar were approved as follows:
Introduced by Council Member Polvorosa, who moved adoption of the Consent
Calendar, with all items deemed to have been read by title, seconded by
Council Member Young, with Council Member Loeffler absent (1), and carried
by a majority vote (6).
A.
