• Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 2 -
Redevelopment Agency Meeting - August 5, 1996
Council Member Polvorosa said he will certainly miss Alice. This
lady has an expertise as a City Clerk. Alice is the first person
that candidates and Council Members contact, and she guides you
through the process. She quickly works out problems. When you have
to make out all your reports, she is right there to help walk you
through it. We are certainly going to miss you, Alice. And the
community is going to miss you here in San Leandro.
Council Member Glaze will truly miss Alice. He remembers when she
was at the Public Works Service Center. I think people have
forgotten about Community Standards, Alice was the person who set
that division. That was an important project. Alice used to sit
directly across from Council Member Glaze, we had eye contact lots of
nights. When Alice first became City Clerk she was quiet the first
couple of weeks, it really seemed like she had tamed. At one of the
subsequent meetings Mayor Karp went over an item and said it should
be this way, but Alice said, "No, Mr. Mayor, it is supposed to be
this way. If you like I can read it for you." If it was the right
thing to say, Alice said it. We'll miss that. There are few people
that you can count on to do what is right all the time.
Council Member Loeffler said ditto, ditto, ditto to all the previous
comments. He went on to say that, for anyone who has considered
running for office, Alice will be the first one you have contact
with. You confide in Alice everything, even your finances and
information regarding Fair Political Practices. You build a sense of
trust in Alice. It is a high commendation, we have the utmost trust
in her guidance. There are wonderful things about Alice, like her
sense of humor, she always has a smile, and she has a genuine
enjoyment in what she does. Even at 12:30 in the morning she can
bring life back when our batteries are almost dead. We have given
Alice trust and she has carried that trust forward. San Leandro's
loss is Livermore's gain. Thank you Alice.
Council Member Lothrop said she hasn't had the opportunity to share
all the history that some of the others share. But, she does share
the trustworthiness. Livermore is lucky.
Assistant City Manager Grycz has two roles, one as a supervisor and
the other is on behalf of the City Manager, who is not here tonight.
Ms. Grycz has been asked by Mike Oliver to personally express his
sincere thanks for all that Alice has done for this City and for all
that she has done for the community. Ms. Grycz can't speak to the
memories, but she can speak to the mutual respect that Mike feels
towards you. .(Ms. Grycz presented Alice with a bonsai grown by Mike
Oliver.)
Ms. Grycz, speaking on her own behalf, said that, during the last
eight years, it has been an absolute pleasure working with Alice.
What she has come to appreciate is Alice's poise, grace under fire,
and her ability to instill in others that high standard of
excellence. Alice gives a commitment toward projects anyone asks her
