Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 9 -
Redevelopment Agency Meeting - October 21, 1996
6.6.2 Craig Garner, Craig's Concrete, said Tony Cucchiara is being
put out of business. He said Mr. Cucchiara is a good man and
taxing firearms will not make a difference in getting guns off
the street.
6.6.3 Jay Peterson, 564 East 14th Street, said the 2nd Amendment was
in place to keep government honest. He does not support a tax
on guns. He said this will create a black market.
6.6.4 Nancy Bone, 685 East 14th Street, is an employee of Traders.
She referenced the Business Walk and stated that no one had
stopped by Traders and asked that the Council respond with an
answer.
6.6.5 Stuart Alexander, 2463 West Avenue 133rd, said there seemed to
be other funds available to rebuild City Hall and that Traders
should not be taxed. He said small businesses are being
attacked. He said this creates bad relations between the City
and small businesses. He urged the Council to support small
businesses and oppose the tax.
6.6.6 Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, complimented Council
Member Young for postponing the Minutes. He commented on no
action being taken this evening regarding the Business License
Tax. He urged the Council to bring the issue back to a vote.
6.6.7 Allan Lindsey O'Neal, 14162 Outrigger Drive, said the tax will
cause a loss to the City because guns will be purchased
elsewhere and will be brought back. He said Traders complies
with the law. He said this sends a bad message to small
businesses that anything can be taxed. He is against taxing
concealable weapons because they are used for defense.
6.6.8 Steven Perry, Steven's Gun Shop, opposes the tax. He said
that, to date, he has maintained a good relationship with the
City. He said the tax sends a message that government is
responsible for bad actions. He urged the Council to go after
the criminals. He is also concerned about the funds going
into the general fund.
6.6.9 Thea Perrino, 434 Woolsey Street, spoke of gun violence and
the cost to society, such as hospitals and gun trauma. She
urged the Council to include wholesalers in order to generate
additional funds for prevention.
6.6.10 James Crew said he represents Traders. He said everyone is
concerned about guns being used for inappropriate purposes.
He said the State and Federal Government has control over
firearms, not the Council. He said the Council is trying to
regulate guns and control weapons.
