IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 2000 - 27 (1123) <br /> A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MARCH 31 AS <br /> CESAR CHAVEZ DAY IN SAN LEANDRO <br /> RECITALS <br /> The City of San Leandro does hereby RESOLVE as follows: <br /> That Cesar Estrada Chavez, born March 31, 1927, in Arizona, moved to California as a <br /> young man and began a personal struggle to improve the rights of farm labor workers and improve <br /> the lives of those whose who toil in the fields of our nation. <br /> That Cesar Estrada Chavez, having served in the United States Navy during World War <br /> II, demonstrated his loyalty and commitment to democracy and took a stand throughout his adult <br /> life to fight for farm labor worker rights and social change in California and throughout the nation, <br /> leading millions of people to better lives, inspiring many with his message of a nonviolent fight for <br /> peace <br /> and justice. <br /> That Cesar Estrada Chavez, along with human rights activist Dolores Huerta, organized <br /> the National Farm Workers Association, which would later become the United Farm Workers of <br /> America, AFL -CIO. <br /> • That Cesar Estrada Chavez's efforts focused national attention on the plight of farm <br /> workers and made the world aware of the exposure to dangerous chemicals that farm workers and <br /> consumers face daily. <br /> That Cesar Estrada Chavez's passionate leadership and organizing of national boycotts, <br /> marches, and appearances before policymakers and legislators resulted in many positive changes, <br />
