including the banning of dangerous pesticides. <br /> That Cesar Estrada Chavez led a five -year nonviolent boycott of grapes and organized <br /> thousands of farm workers, encouraging them to join together to fight low wages and demand safe <br /> and fair working conditions. These efforts resulted in the first labor contracts for farm workers in <br /> grape fields and the passage of the California Labor Relations Act in 1975 and the United States <br /> Agricultural Labor Relations Act in 1975. <br /> That Cesar Estrada Chavez's struggles have improved the lives, health and future of <br /> laborers in agriculture and other industries throughout the nation. His life's work benefited all <br /> Americans, standing as a testament that organized action can result in social change and justice <br /> and demonstrating a positive role model of strength and character for the youth of today. <br /> That in recognition of Cesar Estrada Chavez's outstanding contribution to our country, <br /> in 1994 he was posthumously awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal <br /> of Freedom, by President Bill Clinton. He was also inducted into the Labor Hall of Fame by the <br /> AFL -CIO in January 1999. <br /> That legislation has been introduced to establish March 31 as a statewide holiday. The <br /> establishment of such a holiday will be a deserving tribute to the life of this outstanding labor <br /> leader and will also recognize the tremendous contribution to our state of both the United Farm <br /> Workers and the Mexican - American people. <br /> BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that March 31 of each year shall henceforth be <br /> known as Cesar Chavez Day in San Leandro and be celebrated in honor and recognition of this <br /> great American. <br /> Introduced by Council Member Lothrop and passed and adopted this 28` day <br /> of February, 2000, by the following called vote: <br />
