Discussion Regarding Recognition of Historic Lincoln Highway (MacArthur at
Estudillo)
This matter was taken out of order to accommodate the community members that were
present to speak on the matter.
Dennis Matarrese, Raymond Luciano and Larry Adams, members of the Native Sons of the
Golden West, were present to request recognition of the Lincoln Highway which, in the early
I900's, ran through eastern San Leandro. The group has been collaborating with the national
Lincoln Highway Association to research and commemorate this historic highway. Between
1912 and 1927, the highway stretched from New York to San Francisco. In California, it
came through the central valley, over the Altamont Pass, into Castro Valley, and through San
Leandro and Oakland before crossing the San Francisco Bay. In San Leandro, the route went
along Foothill Boulevard from 150` Avenue (where Interstate 580 is now). At about
Estudillo Avenue, the highway traveled up MacArthur Boulevard into Oakland. The Native
Sons of the Golden West would like to have one or two signs installed in San Leandro,
demarking this historic route.
•
