City Council Rules and Communications Committee Page 13
October 26, 2010
The Committee discussed the various options, from replacing polystyrene foam with
recyclable or compostable plastic, to requiring paper -only containers. Members agreed that
their preference would be paper -only, but discussed the concerns of acceptance and
compliance by businesses, and of potential litigation. Ms. Nassab mentioned the City of
Millbrae passed an ordinance banning #6 plastics, which includes polystyrene foam.
Committee Member Prola requested the reports and ordinances from the other local cities
that have banned polystyrene foam. Ms. Nassab will provide links to these documents.
Committee Member Stephens suggested that businesses already using environmentally -
friendly packaging and practices should be praised, and the message should be reinforced
with children and in the schools. He thanked staff for enlightening the Committee on the
issues.
Mr. Hollister indicated that staff would bring a recommendation back to the Committee at a
future meeting.
3. Public Comments
None.
4. Committee Member Comments
None.
5. Adjourn
The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
