SAM /4 ., , <br /> c a% San Leandro Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan <br /> Chapter 2: GOALS AND POLICIES <br /> %. y/ / <br /> traffic volumes and speeds, environmental impacts, activity <br /> centers served, cost, overall feasibility, and agency(s) <br /> responsible for implementation. <br /> 7.4 Update design guidelines and standards for the design of <br /> pedestrian and bicycle facilities that meet state and federal <br /> (including American Disability Act) standards and best <br /> practices. <br /> Goal 8: Raise awareness of the benefits of walking and biking by developing <br /> a coordinated public outreach strategy to encourage bicycling and <br /> walking. <br /> Policies: <br /> 8.1 Continue the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee <br /> (BPAC) as a forum for ongoing discussions concerning bicycle <br /> and pedestrian issues. The BPAC should be involved in the <br /> monitoring, implementation, funding, and updating of bicycle <br /> and pedestrian facilities as well as reviewing other projects that <br /> might affect bicycle and pedestrian access. <br /> 8.2 Maximize public involvement through workshops and other <br /> means such as the City's website. <br /> 8.3 Update the San Leandro Trails and Bikeways Map, as needed, <br /> for public distribution showing bicycle and trail facilities, key <br /> destinations, connections to adjoining jurisdictions, and <br /> bicycling safety information. <br /> 8.4 Sponsor annual events such as "Bike to Work Day ", "Walk to <br /> School Day ", and offer walking and bicycling safety courses for <br /> adults, families and children. <br /> 8.5 Develop an incentive program for City employees and to serve <br /> as a model to other city employers to encourage walking and <br /> bicycling to work. <br /> 8.6 Develop a program to recognize employers, organizations or <br /> individuals that encourage walking and bicycling as an <br /> alternative to driving for trips to work, school or other <br /> activities. <br /> 8.7 Provide information and an approach to publicize the <br /> advantages and opportunities afforded by walking and <br /> bicycling as viable alternatives to the automobile to reduce <br /> noise, carbon emissions, and fuel consumption and improve air <br /> quality while providing opportunities for healthful exercise. <br /> 8.8 Develop strategies that encourage people to bicycle or walk to <br /> work /school, for errands and to connect to transit. <br /> 8.9 Coordinate efforts with the City agencies, the Cherry City <br /> Cyclists, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, and other relevant <br /> advocacy associations. <br /> Page 15 <br />
