Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association
Page S
the newest Cooking Matters partners, responsible for implementing the program in communities throughout the
San Francisco Bay Area.
Cooking Matter's collaborative program model connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare
. healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Professional chefs and nutritionists volunteer their time and expertise to
lead hands -on courses that teach adults, teens and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful,
safe and tasty ways. In each class, participants prepare and eat a simple, healthy meal. At the end of each class,
they take home a bag of ingredients to prepare that day's recipes at home. Each series of classes also involves a
field trip to a grocery store or, for nearly all of the classes organized by Fresh Approach, a farmers' market.
Fresh Approach is continually seeking new partnering organizations that are willing to volunteer a space to host a
class and to assist in recruiting class participants. In 2011, Fresh Approach will be seeking partners in San
Leandro that can assist in developing classes for San Leandro residents that will include a field trip to the
Downtown San Leandro Farmers' Market.
Proposed Contract Extension:
Through this proposal PCFMA is seeking the opportunity to continue to serve as the operator of the Downtown
San Leandro Farmers' Market. PCFMA proposes a new agreement with the City of San Leandro that incorporates
the following elements:
• Designate PCFMA as the operator of the Downtown San Leandro Farmers' Market for the 2011, 2012,
and 2013 seasons:
• Define the License Area in which PCFMA will operate the farmers' market as the entire length of Parrott
Street between E. 14 Street and Washington Avenue, including the two parking lots which open onto
Parrott Street and have no other ingress or egress.
• Maintain the market's operations as Wednesdays, from 4:OOpm to 8:OOpm.
• Define the market's season as beginning the third Wednesday in April and ending the third Wednesday of
October in each year. The market will be closed on July 4, 2012.
• Include an annual investment by the City of San Leandro into the fanners' market of 56000 per year. Half
will be invoiced by PCFMA at the beginning of April each year and half will be invoiced at the beginning
of July each year.
•
• Maintain other elements of the current agreement — such as those requiring PCFMA to provide general
liability insurance which meets the city's requirements and to ensure ongoing compliance with local,
•
county and state regulations — in the new agreement. •
Proposed Budget to Accomplish the Coals:
The budget that follows suggests proposed expenses needed to maintain the market's operations while pursuing
the goals laid out in this proposal. The budget assumes the continued growth of the market with additional
producers and additional customers. It also assumes that with the increase in customers will come and increase in
the utilization of market promotions that encourage shoppers to visit various elements of the market, such as the
farmers, non - agricultural producers, artisans, special events, and merchant booths.
The budget also assumes the farmers' market will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, resulting in slightly
lower revenues that year than in 2011. Any excess costs will be covered through additional sponsorships,
additional stall fees, or a reduction is projected activity or program costs.
PCFMA will provide written financial reports annually, within 60 days of the final day of the market each season.
•
