•
We care because we want all students to believe that they are eating healthy food at
•
school. Poor diet has been found to negatively influence the ability to learn through
decreased motivation and attentiveness. Research shows that healthy, welt - nourished
students are more prepared to learn and more likely to attend school and class.
Since students spend most of their time at school, serving healthy school lunches will
promote healthy eating habits.
Recommendation #5 incorporate Healthy Body Image into School Curriculum
• Incorporate healthy body image education into Health and Safety classes
• Develop a campaign on campus to promote healthy body image awareness month in
October
Findings
79% of students believe the media influences society's definition of beauty
Why We Care
We care about this because many people, especially youth, go through dangerous and
extreme measures to obtain an unrealistic "perfect body." A report by Girls Scouts for
America found that body dissatisfaction may lead to unhealthy eating and dieting
habits. Since media consumes our culture, we believe a healthy body image workshop,
which incorporates media literacy, would empower youth to better understand media
images and develop healthy self images.
Recommendation #6 Increase Opportunities for Students to Participate in Physical
Activities
• Organize on- campus activities during lunch time
• Open up school fields for students to use during lunch and after school
• Increase students access to the school weight room by allowing students other than
those enrolled in a physical education class or on a sports team to use the gym
• Expand the current fitness center to accommodate more students
Findings
47.5% of students reported they want to be more fit
Why We Care
Research shows that being active is key to physical and emotional health. However, as
teenagers experience more demands with academics and develop new habits such as
talking on the phone, watching television or spending time online, they are less likely
to participate in physical activity. Students need more opportunities for physical
activities in safe and accessible environments. Since students spend most of their time
at school, and many are unable to afford a gym membership, school is a perfect place
to engage students in physical activity.
4 Advocating Change Together (ACT): A Program of Girls Incorporated of Alameda County
School Wellness Policy Recommendations 2010 -2011 girls
Endorsed by the San Leandro Youth Advisory Commission on May 17 2010 IOC
of Aiwa& •.....
