41% of students report they do not eat lunch due to lack of time
52.4% report they would eat lunch from school if the service was faster
• Why We Care
Lines are excessively long and there is not enough time to eat. Without proper nutrients,
it is difficult to concentrate. By increasing lunch time, we believe students will be more
likely to eat during lunch, which will increase their productivity in class.
Recommendation #3 Increase Students Access to Fruits and Vegetables
• Establish a school garden at San Leandro High School to give students an opportunity
to plant, harvest, prepare, and eat food they grow
• Work with grant programs like the USDA Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Program (FVPP) to
offer students free fruit and veggie snacks during class, in vending machines, and with
school meals
• Make more packaged salads available
Findings
Students hesitate to use the salad bar because it is often very messy
80% report it is NOT very easy to get fresh fruits
86% report it is NOT very easy to get vegetables
Why We Care •
We care about this because students need at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
daily. We believe students are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables if quality options
are made available. By allowing students to harvest vegetables, they will learn to
appreciate gardening and take pride in consuming their harvest.
Recommendation #4 Provide More Variety, Fresher, Tastier and Healthier Options
• Create a Nutrition Advisory Board with student representation to advocate for student
needs
• Solicit student preferences in planning menus and snacks through annual focus groups,
surveys and taste tests of new foods and recipes
• Identify food suppliers who offer tastier and fresher choices
Findings
56.4% rated school lunch as 5 or less (1 s— , c d J,-. ‘t.'-‘•
being unhealthy and 10 being healthy)
46.9% do not eat lunch at school because,z
it tastes too bad Ar
52.6% do not think they eat healthy „ •ri' ` , F *
overall '; ' ` :! •
61% brought food from home or buy it on fSti, a '
t. nib i =.!n t[
the way because it tastes better which
indicates that they're avoiding school
food g, a, ms µ.
61% reported they skip lunch all together ' . ,,. - i c ,
• Packaged Lunch from the Cafeteria
Why We Care
3 Advocating Change Together (ACT): A Program of Girls Incorporated of Alameda County
School Wellness Policy Recommendations 2010 -2011 girls
Endorsed by the San Leandro Youth Advisory Commission on May 17 2010 I I1C.
Sionala.
