CITY COUNCIL REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
City Councilmembers report on meetings and other local events attended since the last
meeting; report on attendance at conferences and seminars; and make brief comments on
issues of concern.
Councilmember Gregory reported that Assemblymember Mary Hayashi was named
Legislator of the Year by the Red Cross, and Senator Corbett was recently honored for her
work by the Portuguese community at an event hosted by Maria Cabral. Councilmember
Gregory attended the recent San Leandro Scholarship Foundation fundraiser.
Councilmember Souza reported on the Council's recent lobbying trip to Washington, D.C.
While in Washington, Councilmember Souza rented a bike from a vending machine and rode
around the monuments, and she suggested bike rental machines would be a good amenity for
the East Bay Greenway. She participated in Fire Ops 101, and donned 70 pounds of gear to
help extinguish a fire.
Councilmember Starosciak also reported on the Washington, D.C. trip. The Councilmembers
met with representatives from the offices of Congressmember Stark, Senators Boxer and
Feinstein, the Department of Justice's COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services)
Program, and the Department of Transportation. Congressmember Stark's office ordered a
flag for the Senior Community Center, which the City received today. Councilmember
Starosciak reported on her attendance at the National League of Cities' Congressional City
Conference. She attended last week's Alameda County Transportation Commission [ACTC]
meeting, where the ACTC Board received the initial vision scenario for the One Bay Area
Plan. She suggested it might be useful for a City commission, Council committee, or staff to
give feedback on the document. Councilmember Starosciak thanked staff for their efforts to
attain the LEED Gold certification of the Senior Community Center, and for completion of
the Emergency Operations Center. She passed on a comment from a constituent that,
although City staff has experienced a 20% reduction, the public has not been noticeably
affected. Councilmember Starosciak expressed her appreciation to City staff for maintaining
service levels through these difficult times.
