WEEKLY UPDATE
To: City Council
From: Steve Hollister, City Manager May 26, 2011
UPCOMING MEETINGS
• June 3 — Finance Committee Meeting, 8:15 a.m., Sister Cities Gallery
• June 6 — City Council Meeting, 7:00 p.m., Chambers
• June 7 — Shoreline- Marina Committee Meeting, 4:00 p.m., Sister Cities Gallery
• June 9 — Business and Housing Committee Meeting, 4:00 p.m., Sister Cities Gallery
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
Annual Adult Volunteer Appreciation Event
• City volunteers will be recognized at a Volunteer Appreciation Afternoon Tea on Thursday,
June 23, at 3:00 p.m. at the Senior Community Center. As resources shrink, City
Departments are increasing their use of volunteers. The number of volunteer hours increased
from 19,000 last year to over 23,000 hours, with 285 volunteers donating their time and
skills.
• Unfortunately, as financial resources have shrunk, we have had to eliminate the larger
luncheon that has been held for the volunteers in past years. We are hoping the afternoon tea
event will adequately express our appreciation for their time and service.
• If you would like to attend, please notify Yolanda Carrasco by June 17.
COUNCIL FOLLOW -UP
Police Department Grant Submission
• The San Leandro Police Department (SLPD) has submitted an application to the U.S.D.O.J.
COPS Hiring program for Federal Fiscal Year 2011. The proposal requests funding for two
new full -time Police Officer positions: a Crime Free Business Officer and a Senior Citizen
Services Officer.
• *The Crime Free Business Officer would implement and oversee the Crime Free Business
Program (similar to our current Crime Free Multi - Housing Program), with a focus on
reducing Part 1 crimes occurring at San Leandro _businesses.The_proggramwould be open -to
all, but the start up would focus on businesses in the Downtown Association and Business
Association of South San Leandro. Other businesses with high crime volume would also be
identified and approached for inclusion at the start up. It is hoped that, as the program
evolves, 100% of all businesses in San Leandro will take advantage of the partnership and
crime reduction opportunities this program offers.
• The Senior Citizen Services Officer would focus on the specific crime prevention/education
strategies for our large senior citizen population, and would also focus on specialized
criminal investigation of senior citizens who are victimized. Specific focus would be aimed
at issues like pedestrian and traffic safety, situation awareness, education about how not to
fall victim to scams targeted at senior citizens, prevention and investigation of elder abuse,
and resources for seniors who wish to live independently but are using police and fire
department resources. It is hoped that the specialized education/enforcement component of
each of these positions will continue to lower San Leandro's crime rate and improve the
quality of life for all who frequent our City.
