CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
CITY COUNCIL AIRPORT COMMITTEE
JOINT MEETING WITH PORT OF OAKLAND AVIATION COMMITTEE
September 27, 2004
1:30 p.m. — 2:30 p.m.
Port of Oakland
530 Water Street
Oakland, California
Port Board Room
HIGHLIGHTS
Committee Members: Councilmember Grant and Councilmember Santos
City staff present: City Manager John Jermanis and Community Relations Representative
Kathy Ornelas
Port of Oakland Members: Commissioners Kenneth Katzoff, Darlene Ayers - Johnson, Frank
Kiang, Director of Aviation Steve Grossman, plus numerous Port staff
Public present: 2
The meeting was called to order at 1:35 p.m. by Port Committee Chair Katzoff.
1. Committee Discussion /Questions
The City Council Airport Committee had submitted to the Port a list of seven questions for
discussion at the meeting. The Port summarized answers to each question in the attached
handout and each was briefly discussed.
Regarding change of meeting dates, the Port agreed that flexibility in meeting schedules
could allow an opportunity for more public to attend and recommended that a future meeting
be held on an evening. Committee Members concurred that an evening meeting would be
good for broader attendance. Port and City staff will work together to schedule a future
evening meeting.
Regarding replies to questions from the Port Board of Commissioners, the request was made
to have questions to Port staff at least 20 days prior to each meeting. That will give staff time
to prepare responses and share information with the Commissioners. The Port will also make
an attempt to provide the City with responses to the questions prior to each meeting.
Regarding the need to encourage Fed -Ex to eliminate 727's from its fleet as soon as possible,
Director of Aviation Grossman stated that the response he continues to receive from FedEx is
that the 727's will be phased out "over time." Committee Member Santos asked for a
timeline for this phase -out. Mr. Grossman will ask FedEx again for a more definitive time
line. Committee Member Grant asked the Port to take a leadership role nationally in getting
FedEx to be more aggressive in this phase -out.
