Mayor Sheila Young
• •
July 15, 2004
Fourth, even when approaching under visual conditions, some pilots follow the
ILS glide slope to land. Following a glide slope allows pilots to descend in a
gradual manner, thereby creating less noise on approach. If there are 2 ILS's,
this will allow pilots the option of following a glide slope to either runway under
visual or instrument conditions.
Please note, having 2 ILS's will not increase capacity.
15) In the use of the two runways, explain how using two instrument landing
systems will help in keeping flights away from San Leandro.
Answer: As stated above, having an ILS on 27R ensures that touch and go
traffic can continue on 27L, away from residential areas. Having an ILS on 27L
ensures that instrument landings can occur on 27L at any time — without the "side
step maneuver" as sometimes occurs today. During night and, probably, evening
hours, arrivals can be directed to 27L.
We look forward to meeting with you. Please do not hesitate to call me or my
staff if you have questions related to this letter.
Sincerely,
•
-ven ross an
Director of Aviation
cc: City Council
John Jermanis
