• <br /> • SECTION 8. VA ONS (Cont'd) • DRAFT <br /> 2. Vacations may be pre - selected prior to the vacation year. Where vacations are pre- <br /> selected, such shall occur during an established pre - selection period. Pre - selection <br /> shall be based on seniority of the members by shift/division without regard for <br /> rank. Employees may elect to split vacations, but if vacations are split, no <br /> employee will be allowed a second leave period that will interfere with another <br /> employee's first choice, if selected during the pre - selection period. Once the pre- <br /> selection period has expired, remaining vacation time shall be selected on a first - <br /> come basis. • <br /> 3. Annual vacation will be equalized through the year, so that adequate staffing can <br /> be maintained as determined by the Chief. • <br /> • <br /> E. MAXIMUM VACATION LEAVE. An employee shall be allowed to take two times his/her <br /> annual vacation accrual during any calendar year, provided that he/she has accumulated <br /> sufficient unused vacation leave. One and one -half times his/her annual vacation accrual <br /> may be pre - selected as described in Subsection 8.D.2., and the balance (one -half) may be <br /> selected through an informal third selection. <br /> F. CASH PAYMENT IN LIEU OF VACATION LEAVE. An employee who has completed <br /> the equivalent of 365 calendar days of employment who leaves the Department service for <br /> any reason shall be paid at the hourly rate as set forth in Section 6.C. for unused vacation <br /> accrued to the date of separation, provided that such entitlement shall not exceed vacation <br /> earned during the two years of employment preceding such separation. <br /> Employees shall have the primary responsibility to schedule and take sufficient vacation <br /> leave to reduce their accrued vacation leave balances to levels which do not exceed the <br /> amount for which they can receive cash payment hereunder upon termination. <br /> H. EMERGENCY VACATION LEAVE. Leave of absence with pay because of personal <br /> emergency of a person in the County/District service may be granted by the Chief for not <br /> more than 2 shifts/days during a calendar year to deal with the personal emergency. Time <br /> taken for leave of absence under the provisions of this subsection shall be deducted from <br /> the vacation allowance of such person. Procedures for Emergency Vacation Leave are <br /> found in the Department's Official Action Guidelines. <br /> SECTION 9. SICK LEAVE <br /> A. SICK LEAVE DEFINED. As used in this section, "sick leave" means leaves of absence <br /> of an employee because of any of the following: <br /> • <br /> 1. Illness or injury other than an industrial illness or injury which renders him/her <br /> incapable of performing his/her work or duties for the Department; <br /> 2.
