She said time does not matter to Ms. Short - <br /> only the quality of care. She said Ms. Short works behind the scenes <br /> doing what needs to be done. <br /> Mayor Corbett thanked Council Member Loeffler for arranging for this <br /> presentation. Council Member Loeffler said it is important to pause <br /> and recognize teachers. He said he still respects and honors his high <br /> school teacher, Ma Adams. He said Ms. Hurley was unable to attend and <br /> noted she is retiring from the San Lorenzo Unified School District. <br /> Council Member Perry said, as the daughter of a 35-year teacher and <br /> with an aunt and uncle who are teachers, she appreciates their role. <br /> She said Barbara Brown from San Leandro High School was the first <br /> person to get her involved in politics; she credited Ms. Brown for her <br /> position today. <br /> B. Proclamation Declaring May "Water Awareness Month. " <br /> Mayor Corbett read the Proclamation and commended the East Bay <br /> Municipal Utility District for its outstanding efforts and <br /> contributions to the quality of life for the citizens of San Leandro. <br /> Frank Mellon, East Bay Municipal Utility District Board Member, thanked <br /> everyone for their support. He said EBMUD is dedicated to the <br /> proposition that high-quality water is what is needed and, to that end, <br /> ' they are moving forward with a seismic improvement project to ensure <br /> they will be prepared and will be able to continue to deliver water. <br /> C. Proclamation Recognizing May as "Older Americans Month. " <br /> Mayor Corbett read the Proclamation, which she said honors our older <br /> citizens, an important segment of our population. She said seniors <br /> provide an important foundation for all of us and thanked them for all <br /> they do. She presented the Proclamation to Leroy King, Chairman of the <br /> Commission on Aging. Mr. King thanked the City on behalf of the <br /> "seasoned citizens" of San Leandro. He said getting old is inevitable <br /> but does not mean obsolescence. He said many of our older citizens <br /> have a great deal of viability and are excellent resources. <br />
