Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 12, 1995 Page - 4 - <br /> 5. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> A. Council Member Myers thanked Martin Francis for the wonderful flag <br /> ceremony. He also congratulated staff for the excellent Cherry <br /> Festival . He said Marina Faire Homeowners' Association would <br /> donate the funds they raised to the San Leandro High School <br /> scholarship fund. <br /> B. Council Member Loeffler commended the Cherry Festival and said he <br /> would like to see the Festival honor the pioneers and roots of the <br /> community. He commended the Downtown Business Association for <br /> their involvement in the Festival . <br /> Council Member Loeffler thanked Martin Francis and the San Lorenzo <br /> Unified School District for their participation in the flag <br /> program. <br /> Council Member Loeffler asked what would be happening to the trees <br /> around City Hall as part of the retrofit program. Mayor Corbett <br /> explained that many of the plants had been reused, including the <br /> rhododendrons, two cherry trees, camellias, and azaleas. The City <br /> Manager explained that this was discussed with the City Council <br /> Facilities Committee. He said the Modesto Ash trees were planted <br /> in the 1960's and only had a 50-year life span. He said the trees <br /> in front of City Hall had caused over $400,000 worth of sidewalk, <br /> curb, and gutter damage. He said some of the trees had to be <br /> removed in order to gain access to the building foundation with <br /> heavy equipment. He described the City's Reforestation Program <br /> which began in 1978 and which includes landscaping and tree <br /> planting on East 14th Street. He said the retrofit plan includes <br /> trees to create an urban forest. <br /> Council Member Loeffler said more than $620,000 in scholarships <br /> was presented to San Leandro High School students on Friday. <br /> Council Member Loeffler noted he would not be able to attend the <br /> June 13th meeting because he would be attending fifth grade <br /> promotion ceremonies at his school . He said he supported the <br /> proposed budget. In response to questions, the City Manager said <br /> the visioning process is part of the budget but will be defined by <br /> the City Council . <br /> C. Vice Mayor Kerr said the Cherry Festival was the best ever. <br /> Vice Mayor Kerr thanked the Finance Committee and staff for an <br /> outstanding job on the budget, for keeping rates down, and for no <br /> big surprises in the budget. <br /> Vice Mayor Kerr commended the Fire Department for their excellent <br /> work in containing a fire in the Mission Bay Mobile Home Park. <br />
