Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - July 17, 1995 Page - 5 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
J. Sherry Santilena, 633 Oakes Boulevard, asked the City Council to
approve the skateboard park at Thrasher Park. She said more and more
skaters are being ticketed, and the merchants are unhappy. She said
the park would provide a much-needed service for the 12-18 year olds,
a group which is usually forgotten.
K. Tiffany Popham, 363 Dutton Avenue, said there is no place for kids to
go in San Leandro - there is no movie theater, pool places, skating
rink, etc. - and kids can't hang out in groups of more than three
because they are considered gangs. She said they want to be with their
friends, and the City Council should consider them as quickly as they
can.
L. Vera Ayres, 381 Melven Court, said she has not heard anything from
staff or the City Council regarding a skateboard park, and no one has
officially told the taxpayers what is going to be involved with
liability to the City. She said it should be privatized. She said the
Par Course is overrun with squirrels which are a potential health
hazard.
M. Sabrina Vasquez, 13242 Doolittle Drive, thanked the City Council for
considering a skateboard park. She said kids were skateboarding at the
Safeway loading dock and a police officer made them leave, but a car
alarm went off and the police did not do anything about it. Kids
should be permitted to use the parking garage after hours and on
Sundays and should be able to skate at the schools.
N. Bob Grazzini , 236 Begier Avenue, said the skateboard issue is only the
first step in moving forward. He said the City needs to think about
. things for_kids. He said people want to buy property because they want
to bring their families into town. San Leandro's schools and parks are
good, but we have to make them better and have to think of something
for teenagers and their needs.
6.
