Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - October 2, 1995 Page - 6 -
CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued)
Council Member Loeffler said he received a jay-walking ticket for
crossing from Pelton Center to Lucky's. He said he was embarrassed to
receive the ticket, but he commended the police officer who issued it
and said he is pleased to see the pedestrian safety program at work.
F. Council Member Myers said the Optimist Club held its 52nd installation
of officers, with Council Member Perry as the Mistress of Ceremonies
and himself and Vice Mayor Kerr in attendance.
Council Member Myers said the City Council is on record that it does
not intend to close the Mulford-Marina Branch Library and has never
planned to do so. He said staff met with the Marina Faire and Mulford
Gardens Homeowners Associations, and concern was expressed regarding
selling excess property in that area. He said the City has vital
pieces of property in other areas of San Leandro, and staff should be
directed to concentrate on the large parcels rather than the smaller
pieces of property in the golf course area.
Mayor Corbett concurred; she said there are other priorities, and she
has no problems with moving off the golf course areas.
Council Member Perry said the public has a lot of misinformation about
the golf course surplus property; she agreed that other priorities are
higher on the surplus property list.
Vice Mayor Kerr concurred but said he understands staff is just looking
into whether the sale of the excess golf course properties is feasible.
Council Member Galvan said he has no problem with focusing priority on
other pieces of City property, but wants to keep all options open.
Council Member Myers said the golf course property is not a priority
right now, and staff should move forward with other properties that
will realize more money.
Council Member Loeffler said he believed the Council consensus was
getting rid of surplus property, preferably the high value pieces, and
this property came up as excess. He said staff should concentrate on
the larger options but not preclude this property from consideration.
Mayor Corbett said it is disheartening to read the misinformation in
the newspaper. She said the Council told staff to look at surplus
property, but no decision was made or action taken. She said a later
article said the Council changed its mind, but there had been no
decision to close the library in the first place.
