Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - October 16, 1995 Page - 10 - <br /> PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued) <br /> There being no further comments from the public, on motion of Council <br /> Member Myers, seconded by Council Member Perry, and carried by a <br /> majority vote (7) , the Public Hearing was closed. <br /> Council Member Myers said his company does work in San Leandro, and <br /> this is not going to make or break them from doing business. He said <br /> this process started in February at budget time when the Finance <br /> Committee recommended fee increases, and there have been numerous <br /> public meetings. He said the Council is very sensitive to business <br /> needs and noted the last business license increase was in 1988. He <br /> said he wants to see the City, Chamber, and Manufacturers' Association <br /> continue to work hand-in-hand for the betterment of San Leandro. He <br /> said he would like Mr. Jermanis to work out issues with concerned <br /> businesses and present an ordinance at the next Council meeting. <br /> The following Motion was then introduced: <br /> Minute Order No. 95-74, Motion Regarding Proposed Change in the Method <br /> of Computation of the Business License Fee. (1203) <br /> On motion by Council Member Polvorosa, who moved its approval , seconded <br /> by Council Member Kerr, and carried by a majority vote (7) , the City <br /> Council directed staff to work with interested parties, investigate <br /> their concerns, and incorporate them into an ordinance to be presented <br /> to the City Council on November 6, 1995. <br /> Vice Mayor Kerr said the City needs to continue to look for ways to cut <br /> expenses. <br /> Council Member Galvan said it is the City Council 's obligation to make <br /> sure its house is in order before asking for additional revenues. He <br /> suggested formation of a committee to talk about ways to realize <br /> savings and cut costs. Mayor Corbett thanked Council Member Galvan and <br /> noted that the Finance Committee performs that task. <br /> Council Member Perry said that is the job of the Finance Committee. <br /> She said the budget review process at the beginning of the year is the <br /> appropriate time to review these issues. She said she would like staff <br /> to work on the Professional , Semi-Professional , and Part-time <br /> categories in the business license fees, as well as car dealerships and <br /> the impact on fleet sales. <br /> Council Member Loeffler agreed the fees related to car dealers need to <br /> be restructured. He said he appreciates the business community's <br /> remarks and understands the issue of principle. He said the City is <br /> not dependent on property tax but a series of things, and agreed the <br /> Finance Committee can look at making cuts. <br />
