Minutes-City Council/Redevelopment Agency Meeting-December 4, 1995 Page - 3 -
5. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Public Comments are limited to 5 minutes per person. The public is invited
to make any comments related to Agenda items (including San Leandro
Redevelopment Agency, San Leandro Parking Authority, and San Leandro
Industrial Development Authority) or other items of public interest at this
time. Comments regarding Public Hearing items will be heard during the
Public Hearing portion of the Agenda.
A. Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, said the League of Cities has
never given an award to a taxpayers' advocate. He said the Mayor
should not have used City funds to go to the Philippines. He said the
City spends taxpayers' money and is in charge of making sure it is
spent correctly. He said the Mayor could have accomplished the same
thing with a letter.
Mayor Corbett said the government of Taiwan paid for the plane ticket
• to Taiwan, and the City paid for the portion between Taiwan and the
Philippines.
Vice Mayor Kerr said San Leandro has a strong community of Philippine
people, the Naga Association, who were behind the trip 100%. He said
all the City paid for was the airfare from Taiwan to the Philippines,
and he would be willing to pay it himself. He said the City wanted to
reach out to the people of Naga who suffered from the typhoon.
B. Dana Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, said the media stated there were no
Council meetings between November 6 and December 4, yet there were Work
Sessions. He said media relations training was an asinine idea. He
said the City needs to hold the line on salaries. He spoke regarding
vigils for Evelyna LeBlanc and said Council Member Perry and Mayor
Corbett did not attend. He said crime, not a trade imbalance with
Taiwan, is driving residents and businesses out of town.
Mayor Corbett said Mr. Johnson's comments were appreciated, but he had
made some misstatements.
Council Member Perry said she attended the first Evelyna LeBlanc vigil
and noted there was a basketball game for funds for the effort. She
said Council Members were involved with raising funds for the schools
when one of the other vigils was held.
Mayor Corbett said the City Council established a reward for the
Evelyna LeBlanc case and said there is a no-holds-barred effort to find
the perpetrator. She said the City Council is very concerned about
these kinds of issues, and Mr. Johnson should know better.
C. James Begier, 929 Lee Avenue, said the Agenda indicated adjournment to
December 11, 1995, the small conference room at the Service Center. He
said the meeting will be held in a room where the public can't attend
and a vote will be taken. Mike Oliver, City Manager, explained that
the December 11th meeting is a Work Session and does not concern the
topic of Eminent Domain.
