•
Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - January 19, 1993 Page - 7 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
A. Resolution No. 93-19, Resolution Encouraging Reinvestment in America
(urges Congress and President-Elect Clinton to make the reinvestment
and rebuilding of America's cities and the education of America's
children the top priorities in 1993) . (1123)
Introduced by Council Member Perry, who moved its adoption, seconded by
Council Member Corbett, and carried by the following called vote:
AYES: Council Members Corbett, Faria, Kerr, Myers, Perry,
Polvorosa; ( 6 )
NOES: None ( 0 )
ABSENT: Mayor Karp ( 1 )
B. Matter of Request from Classical Philharmonic Orchestra for $5,000
Grant in Fiscal Year 1992-93.
Attachment: Letter from the Recreation and Parks Commission
recommending approval of the grant request.
Jack Goodrich, Dick Lind, and Gordon Weaver, Treasurer of the
Orchestra, addressed the City Council .
Council Member Perry referred to the letter dated December 17, 1992,
from the Orchestra, which indicates only 20% of the costs are covered
by ticket sales. She said that seemed low and asked why. Mr. Lind
said 20% is the average for all non-profit music organizations.
Council Member Perry asked whether other cities were asked for funding.
Mr. Lind said none were asked at the time of the report.
Council Member Perry said personnel costs indicated $6,000 for the
Music and Executive Director, and it appeared he was making $18,000 a
year. Mr. Lind pointed out that the Director was supposed to receive
$3,000, but the group has been unable to pay him.
Council Member Perry asked how many musicians performed on average.
Mr. Lind said there are 20-40, depending upon the performance; and it
costs $10,000-12,000 per performance, including rehearsals, programs,
etc.
Council Member Myers said it appeared there were no funds from Hayward
or Alameda County this year. Mr. Lind said that was correct; there
were also none last year. Mr. Lind said this is the first year the
Orchestra has gone out into the Tri-Valley area and put on performances
and the first time they felt it was appropriate to contact cities in
those areas to ask for assistance with funding.
