Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - March 1, 1993 Page - 16 -
CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued)
G. Council Member Polvorosa congratulated his daughter, Nicole, and his
son-in-law, Leroy Maes, on the birth of Jilian Victoria Maes on
February 16.
H. Council Member Polvorosa congratulated Kathy Ornelas regarding the
memorandum on graffiti . He said it is nice to see that a company
coming into San Leandro noted that there does not seem to be graffiti .
I . Council Member Perry said she and Council Member Corbett worked on the
campus beautification program at San Leandro High School on Saturday
and spent three hours pulling weeds. She said this is part of the
Partnership for Youth Safety Program and was highly successful .
J. Council Member Perry said the School Liaison Committee would be meeting
to discuss establishment of drug-free zones around schools or parks.
She said those caught with drugs in those areas would not be permitted
to plea bargain.
K. Council Member Perry noted that she has been appointed by BCDC to the
Enforcement Committee.
L. Council Member Faria spoke regarding consolidation of the City
Election, and said this matter needs to be discussed with the City
Council and the community before staff is directed to proceed.
M. Mayor Karp said the Manufacturers' Association is going to undertake a
project which would benefit San Leandro's schools. He said Kelly Moore
Company will be providing paint free of charge to school districts in
Northern California. He said the Manufacturers' Association, the
Chamber, and volunteers will be going into the schools and helping
paint them. He said this is an example of how people can pitch in and
help. He suggested that citizens pitch in and help and noted that Mr.
Harter, who is a fine cabinet maker, could put time and effort into
helping the community. He said the schools need help and this is the
time for everyone to pitch in and volunteer. He said, as an example,
a number of people are helping repair the school swimming pool .
N. Mayor Karp noted the City will receive $1 .27 million for dredging. He
said staff did a lot of research and found out that, historically, the
City channel was dredged to 8 feet rather than 6 feet and, on this
basis, were able to convince the Corps of Engineers that the channel
should be dredged to 8 feet and the funds should be appropriated. He
said dredge spoils will be removed off site to the Oakland Scavenger
site in Fremont, and Oakland Scavenger will pay 3/4 of a million
dollars for the spoils. He said after the next dredging materials will
again have to be removed. He said the City Council will be going to
Washington, D.C. , to lobby for a demonstration program to remove the
spoils and also to lobby in favor of HR 140 to stop unfunded mandates.
He said he is proud of the City Council and what they have gotten done
at the federal level .
