She
said they evaluated the retrofit program, neighborhood preparation,
improved-response capabilities, and additional staff members. She said
Mr. McClellan showed slides of faults, high earthquake probability, and
the consequence of earthquakes. She said San Leandro is going to have
a big earthquake -- there is no doubt. She said the City sits right in
the middle of the Hayward Fault. She said the Committee prioritized
and asked questions. She said they asked the City Council to approve
their recommendations. She said she wants to continue to live in San
Leandro with the feeling we are prepared for the earthquake that is
sure to come.
Rick Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, said he served on the Task Force and
thanked the City Council for allowing the Task Force to become
informed. He said going through the process was a good learning
experience as to what the City Council and City staff members go
through every year. He said he served on the Services Sub-Committee,
and they had two meetings each week. He said he is happy to see the
City Council is using a majority of the recommendations from the Task
Force. He said he and his wife were in Sacramento and discussed with
some Assembly members the potential there is for the State to take away
the Sales Tax base in the future. He said the City needs some base
other than Sales Taxes. He said he was happy to see that the City
Council was postponing the decisions regarding the fire equipment,
pending the outcome of fire department consolidation. He said if the
savings occurs perhaps that money could be put into Reserves.
Dale Reed, 1560 Daily Court, was the next speaker. Mayor Karp said he
was the overall Chairperson of the Task Force and thanked him for his
work. Mr. Reed thanked the City Council and staff for the opportunity
to serve on the Task Force. He said the 51 members were dedicated
people and thanked them. He said they put in a lot of time and effort
and went beyond the call of duty. He said they came up with
recommendations for cuts and revenue enhancements for this year, as
well as two additional years. He said the City Council 's adoption of
those recommendations will put the City on a sound financial basis for
the next three years, and he urged the City Council to take this
seriously and consider all of the recommendations.
