Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 5, 1993 Page - 16 - <br /> CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued) <br /> one has ICBO approval , and it is a local inventor. Mayor Karp <br /> reiterated that people should check the valves out. He noted BART had <br /> a valve that did not work during the earthquake. <br /> P. Mayor Karp said he was in Washington, D.C. , two weeks ago. He said he <br /> went in to request a demonstration project to remove dredge materials <br /> from the dredge spoils site after the 1993 dredging for the 1994-95 <br /> fiscal year. He said he testified before the Energy and Water <br /> Committee and received a lot of support from the Port of Oakland to the <br /> EPA. He said, if the City receives approval , it will mean $3.6 <br /> million. <br /> Mayor Karp said he also attended the Base Closure Hearings and spent <br /> time with Chairman Jim Courter. He said he was impressed with the <br /> Hearings. He said he belongs to the Economic Development Advisory <br /> Board (EDAB) Base Retention Committee and was able to bring back <br /> insight from Mr. Courter as well as from talking to other members of <br /> the Committee. He said he is impressed that the Committee is being <br /> very thorough. He said Mr. Courter promised he would give special <br /> attention to the Alameda Naval Air Base and that he would go up to <br /> Washington and make a comparison. Mayor Karp said he had written a <br /> letter suggesting the Washington base be put on the hit list. <br /> Mayor Karp said he was asked to attend a press conference by Senator <br /> Robert Byrd; and he met with Senator Byrd, Senator George Mitchell , <br /> governors, mayors, and state senators testifying for the stimulus <br /> package. He said the package had been passed by the House but was held <br /> up by the Senate. He said the President is starting to compromise. He <br /> said the package includes CDBG funding, transportation funds for <br /> infrastructures, and other monies. Mayor Karp said he also attended <br /> other meetings of significance. <br /> 10.
