Presentation of Proclamation to San Leandro Dispatcher of the Year, <br /> Teresa Loconte, in Recognition of the San Leandro Public Safety <br /> Dispatchers and National Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week, April <br /> 11-17, 1993. <br /> • <br /> The City Clerk read the Proclamation, which recognized the vital work <br /> of public safety dispatchers. Mayor Karp said dispatchers have to be <br /> calm, handle calls in a professional way, and listen very carefully. <br /> He described a recent call in which a dispatcher, through carefully <br /> listening to a call , helped apprehend a suspected burglar. He said the <br /> City has an excellent Police Department, but it would not be as good as <br /> it is without the dispatchers. Teresa Loconte thanked the City Council <br /> on behalf of her peers. <br /> C. Proclamation Declaring April 22, 1993, Earth Day. <br /> The City Clerk read the Proclamation which discussed the need to <br /> nurture and protect the earth and called for a day of celebration to <br /> deepen our commitment for the earth's renewal . Mayor Karp said the <br /> City would be presenting the Proclamation to Physics International , <br /> which has taken Earth Day under its wing - they go to Marina Park and <br /> plant trees and celebrate Earth Day. <br /> D. Proclamation Declaring April 30, 1993, Arbor Day. <br /> The City Clerk read the Proclamation which urged citizens to plant <br /> trees and to protect our urban forests. Mayor Karp noted that the City <br /> has been planting trees throughout the community, on East 14th Street, <br /> Bancroft Avenue, etc. , and said the City lives up to its word when it <br /> talks about Arbor Day. He thanked the City Council for its decision <br /> and presented the Proclamation to Dan Nagle, Public Works Supervisor. <br /> Mr. Nagle said Arbor Day started 120 years ago in Nebraska and is still <br /> important in San Leandro. He said more than 1,500 trees are being <br /> planted this year and compared it to the 1980's when the City suffered <br /> a net loss of 1 ,800 trees. He said the City has come a long way <br /> through the efforts of the Mayor, the City Council , City Manager, <br /> citizens and staff. <br />
