Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 3, 1993 Page - 2 -
PRESENTATIONS (continued)
Christina Valdez was awarded Third Place for her video project on the
Women's Shelter on Davis Street. Mitch White received First Place for
the Key Club T-shirt design; Derek Robinson received Second Place for
the District-wide talent contest in which he played his clarinet; and
Amaris Carroway won Third Place for the scrapbook she had created.
Mayor Karp thanked the Kiwaniians and said they really make a
difference to the community.
5. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Public Comments are limited to 3 minutes per person. The public is invited
to make any comments related to Agenda items or other items of public
interest at this time. Comments regarding Public Hearing items will be
heard during the Public Hearing portion of the Agenda.
A. Vera Ayers, 381 Melven Court, said a City Council who insists on
raising taxes annually does not represent the majority of people in San
Leandro or their Districts. She said the Task Force did not represent
the people. She suggested the City Council hold Town Hall Meetings and
have a dialogue between the Council and the people they represent. She
said Council should not have staff at Town Hall Meetings because staff
does not really want to hear from the people. She said the City
Council should make sure every household knows about the Town Hall
Meetings. She said, instead of doing a newsletter, the City Council
should hold Town Hall Meetings and notice them by inexpensive
announcements.
Council Member Kerr noted he had a Town Hall Meeting last week. He
said 6,600 flyers were distributed, including being sent home with
school children. He said a total of approximately 35 people attended.
He said he has also written several articles in the Washington
Homeowners Association "Messenger," asking people to call him, and has
only received one call as a result.
Mrs. Ayers said the City Council should not have staff at Town Hall
Meetings -- it should just be Council and the public. She said the
City newsletter should be eliminated. Mrs. Ayers asked Council Member
Corbett how many people had attended her Town Hall Meeting. Council
Member Corbett said 40-45. She said she had hand-walked flyers, sent
them home through students, contacted the PTA, made announcements at
City Council Meetings, and there were several articles in the San
Leandro Times.
Council Member Perry said she hand-walked flyers to every home in her
District for her Town Hall Meeting, and over 200 people attended.
