Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 24, 1993 Page - 3 -
Interview Questions
We have your application before us. Please briefly describe any
highlights of your work experience or community involvement that you
think are relevant to the position of City Council Member.
What values and principles guide your decision-making? Give an example
of an actual situation where your values and principles played a role.
What role do you think a City Council Member should assume in
relationship to the Mayor and other Council Members, and to boards and
commissions, the City Manager, staff and citizen groups?
How will you communicate with the other City Council Members, the City
Manager and staff? How would you handle a disagreement between
yourself and another Council Member or between yourself and the City
Manager or staff?
Given the impact of recent budget cutbacks and the likelihood of a
continuing recession, how would you approach the long-term fiscal
health of the community? What are your service priorities and how
should they be funded?
Do you have a vision for this community? What -is it? What can the
City Council do to achieve it?
City Council Discussion
The City Council concluded the initial interviews. They thanked all
the applicants for their participation and interest in the process.
They said they interviewed an excellent group of applicants, and it
shows the interest in the City and the progress the City has made.
They encouraged the applicants to consider public office in the future.
The said it bodes well for the community that these many applicants are
interested in participating in government during these difficult times.
Council Member Myers said he would like to have someone on the Council
who is aware of what is going on right now in the City. He said the
Council agenda for the next two or three months will be heavy. He said
the appointee should come from a City Commission because Commissioners
are aware of City politics, have been involved in City government, have
been involved in the Task Force, etc.
Council Member Kerr said he agreed with Council Member Myers. He
discussed the two options for voting: to simply make a motion for
consideration or to use a voting procedure. The City Council discussed
the options and decided that each Council Member should name his or her
top choices and then continue to consider those people who received
votes.
•
