Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - August 16, 1993 Page - 10 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
G. Matter of Report from Dave Karp Memorial City Council Subcommittee.
Council Member Kerr advised that the Committee has met and decided on
two recommendations. The first recommendation was the re-dedication of
the Library Senior Meeting Facility, in honor of former Mayor Dave
Karp, which has already taken place.
The second recommendation into name the Fairway/Aladdin Overcrossing,
which is expected to be completed about November 17th, in honor of Dave
Karp. The naming has already been approved by Cal -Trans and Alameda
County Transportation. The Committee thinks this is more than
appropriate for former Mayor Karp, due to his involvement in Measure B.
The Committee is asking for the Council 's approval at this time so that
staff can make the proper arrangements.
Council Member Perry said she agrees this is the most appropriate
dedication, and this is an important way to memorialize Dave' s leading
role in transportation.
The following Motion was then introduced:
Minute Order No. 93-63 below. Matter of Naming the Fairway/ Aladdin
Overcrossing in Honor of Former Mayor Dave Karp. Matter of Furlough Program.
City Manager Mike Oliver stated that there is a great degree of
hesitance to recommend a furlough, but it is difficult not having
enough funds. Furloughs are being used throughout the State of
California as a method to reduce employee costs and in an attempt to
minimize long-term disturbance. The furlough will be saving the City
approximately $285,000. This is a pay cut for the employee groups, and
it is something they agreed to take. It will amount to a 2-1/2 percent
pay cut, in addition to not receiving any cost-of-living increase this
year. Also, some employees may not be seeing any salary increase for
a long time due to a salary Pay Plan adjustment. He said the City will
do everything it can to inform the community, including the schools.
•
